Art

Lisa Young

Students will work to hone their drawing and painting skills using a wide range of media including graphite pencil, colored pencil, pen and ink, pastels, charcoal and acrylics. Students will also explore a number of artists and art movements and have the opportunity to work in their style as part of the art appreciation portion of the course.

By the end of the school year students should have a number of pieces of art that can form the basis of a portfolio that can be used to support a college application.

Lisa Young is a professional artist with her own art studio in Warren. She regularly shows her work at Art Fairs and Exhibitions across the Tri-State area and is a member of the NJ Watercolor and Pastel Societies and of the Artsee Artist network. Lisa specializes in animal and people portraiture, landscapes and still life and has a passion for painting endangered animals.

Chorale

Martha Nowik

The High School Chorale meets for one 45-minute period during the co-op day with occasional extra rehearsals as necessary. Our meetings consist of vocal warm-ups to improve vocal technique and intonation, rehearsal of music for upcoming performances with discussion of music history and theory related to the music being studied. Students are encouraged to practice their parts at home. The Chorale typically performs at area nursing homes and in Little Way winter and spring concerts. Repertoire ranges from unison to three- and four-part SAB/SATB anthems, and includes music ranging from Gregorian chant through Renaissance motets to 20th century pop songs.

Our choir director, Martha Nowik, is a home-schooling mom of 10 who holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Church Music from Westminster Choir College where she studied organ, voice and children's choir methods and earned a Level I ORFF-SCHULWERK certificate. Martha holds both the Colleague and Choir Master certificates from the American Guild of Organists. She has taught general music in Catholic schools, and has 42 years of experience working with children's choirs. This is her eighteenth year teaching music with our group.

Drama

Faith Rose

The Drama program at Little Way provides students with a variety of opportunities to get involved in performing arts.  Students have the ability to examine the human condition as portrayed in plays and observed in life. Students are encouraged to improve self-expression through understanding the voice, body, emotions, and intellect, specifically of the “characters” they portray. Theatre stretches the imagination and calls us to question, create, and discover!  The stage is a place where students forge important friendships, where they are given an opportunity to find their voice, make connections among themselves, others, and their world, and simply have fun. LW Drama offers students the chance to act, sing and maybe even dance. This class collaborates to work in other facets of production such as artistic design, props and costumes.  Drama class is an opportunity in which all the players value individual talents given to us by God, cheer one another on and work for the good of our co-op while giving glory to Him. Students will perform at Showcase Day 2 on Friday, May 19th.

Mock Trial Team

Heather Marvell

For the first year, Little Way’s mock trial students will compete with teams from outside co-op as a part of the NJ Bar Foundation’s Mock Trial Competition. Last year’s students were honored to place 2nd statewide in the NJ Bar Foundation’s Law Adventure Competition under Mrs. Marvell’s coaching.

As in past years, students will have the chance to develop analytical skills, as well as writing and speaking skills while also becoming familiar with how trial courts function. Students will serve as attorneys, witnesses and jurors and compete against teams from high schools before a panel of judges. The program is part of a nationwide competition.

Heather has homeschooled her children since 2012, and this is her family’s ninth year at Little Way. She has also practiced law since 2000. She is incredibly proud of her Little Way mock trial students and loves seeing new faces and hearing new perspectives each year.
