Choir

Martha Nowik

N.B. Students MUST be able to read solidly on a 3rd-grade level, and be able to concentrate for the whole 45 minute rehearsal.

The Little Way Treble Choir, for Groups 3 and 4, is a performance-oriented group which learns a wide repertoire of mostly religious music.  Instruction concentrates on developing the child's beautiful singing "head" voice, beginning work in polyphony and continued experience with reading music for mastery. The choir rehearses weekly, and sings in 3 - 6 performances annually along with the High School Chorale (see below). Students are expected to attend most, if not all, rehearsals and to memorize much of the music, which may require some home study.  The students will have robes to wear, and will be expected to care for them properly.

Our choir director, Martha Nowik, is a home-schooling mom of 10 who holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Church Music from Westminster Choir College where she studied organ, voice and children's choir methods and earned a Level I ORFF-SCHULWERK certificate. Martha holds both the Colleague and Choir Master certificates from the American Guild of Organists. She has taught general music in Catholic schools, and has 42 years of experience working with children's choirs. This is her eighteenth year teaching music with our group.

Dance

Evangeline Renieris

(Scheduled opposite Gym. Combined with Group 2)

Girls in Groups 2 and 3 will learn exercises at the barre which are essential to ballet technique and poise. Dancers will learn combinations across the floor and in center to help strengthen and condition them for more challenging steps along the way. Students will also learn proper ballet terminology and flexibility exercises. Some dance combinations learned during the year and for Showcase Day 1 on Friday, May 12th, will be in a more contemporary ballet style, which is a fusion of classical ballet and contemporary ballet, which allows more freedom and creativity of movement.

Dance attire needed:

  • pink ballet shoes that fit snugly

  • leotard & tights (any color), or a fitted top and leggings / fitted shorts

Fitted dancewear allows the teacher to gauge proper alignment and correct technique. Students change into regular clothes after dance class.

Music & Chimes

Martha Nowik

American folk songs will be featured along with religious music, much of it particularly Catholic, including Gregorian chant. A featured “composer of the month”, from October through April, will be studied. It is hoped that these classes will be supplemental to parents’ providing the other kinds of music learning that are important for all children: private instrument lessons, music listening and history at home, attendance at concerts, and participation in church choirs and other performing ensembles.

Group 3 students will continue to practice singing on pitch and reading music. They will improve their recorder playing, and use Orff instruments in creating their own music. Improvisation will be emphasized. Music appreciation and music history will be incorporated into the weekly classes. A recorder is required for class, and a modicum of home practice will be expected. Group 3 will also play music on our three-octave set of hand-chimes during classes and for our concerts, and may participate in a festival with players from around the tri-state area.

Please see the Choir description above for information about our instructor.
